TOP 2 region #BestinTravel 2016
West Iceland together everything that makes this country unique. Glaciers wrapped in clouds, rugged lava fields, thundering waterfalls ... just 2 hours drive from Reykjavik. However, it is a region that is not on the radar of tourists. 2016 may be the year of the west as Into the Glacier, an artificial ice cave in the glacier Langjökull, will open to the public.
The western Iceland is only 2 hours drive from the capital (Reykjavik), but often overlooked. This broad and varied region capture all the best of the fauna and flora that are not on the tourist circuit: wrapped in clouds, rugged lava fields crossed by large lava tubes, bright green meadows and towering waterfalls, glaciers ideal for mounting by horse. The Snaefellsnes peninsula , 90 km long, and the Snæfellsjökull National Park are crowned Snæfellsjökull ice field, immortalized by Jules Verne Journey to the Center of the Earth. In addition there are whales, seals, puffins and dozens of seabirds.
While Iceland has seen tourism grow with amazing figures (only 24% in 2014!) and has become a fashionable destination, the infrastructure has not begun to meet demand so far, with new pensions and cafes they are opened. In 2016 it is expected that the West finally receive the international attention it deserves, since Into the Glacier, the Glacier Langjökull artificial cave will be open to the public and attract visitors to this emerging region. We will have to go before the crowds arrive!
Iceland Western traveler leaves choose your own adventure. You to Scan New Langjökull ice cave, climbing the glacier that inspired Jules Verne in the Snæfellsjökull National Park, obervar colonies of puffins or watch whales from the Snæfellsnes peninsula? Or maybe you prefer to go inward, to Hallmundarhraun, a huge lava field, to explore the largest lava tube in the country Víðgelmir ?
Western Iceland frequents the great and the small screen, HBO Hollywood. Ben Stiller, for example, skateboarding moves to the Kirkjufell (the most photographed mountain in the country) in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. It is also possible to see local wildlife (especially an Icelandic goat in this region that ends up being eaten by a Dragon) in the Game of Thrones series.
As tourism takes off in western Iceland, the question is how to expand the tourist infrastructure without damaging the natural beauty of the region. Establishments such as farm-pension-residence artists Fljotstunga intended to guide visitors through the lava fields neighbors following ecologically and culturally sustainable practices.
Bjarnarhofn farm production leads hákarl (fermented shark meat), a very strong traditional Icelandic dish. The boreal shark, with which this dish is prepared, is poisonous if eaten fresh and fermentation neutralizes the toxin. Bjarnarhofn small museum tells the history of this culinary curiosity. One caveat: the boreal shark is on the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN.
