Getting around Rome

Public transport :
ATAC (tel: 06 57003; www.atac.roma.it ), is responsible for the fleet of buses and trams in the city. The network consists of 297 bus lines and six tram lines, which cover the entire city and run daily (05.30-24.00). After midnight, there are only 22 bus routes available Met.Ro (tel: 800 431 784;. www.romametropolitane.it ) operates two subway lines (A and B). TLOS trains run every five or ten minutes between 0500-2330.
COTRAL is responsible for regional public transport and has blue buses that serve the region of Lazio. Night buses run daily (00.00-05.30) and serve 22 routes throughout the city. These buses and stops (fermata) are identified with the letter "N".
Tickets must be purchased in advance at ATAC counters, tobacconists (tabacchi) or in ticket machines in metro stations. The cheapest ticket is Biglietto Integrato a Tempo (BIT), and is valid for 75 minutes on buses and trams ATAC, or a trip on the subway or commuter trains.
Bonds day (BIG) and week (CIS), they can be used in all types of transport in the city. You can also purchase monthly bonuses. For those visiting the city for two or three days, it is the Biglietto Turistico (BTI), valid for three days, and allows the use of buses, trams, subway and trains within the city limits. The bonus BIRG, allows unlimited travel throughout the region of Lazio, for a whole day.
Taxis :
Taxi ranks are dotted around the city, but almost always, never find when you need them most. We recommend using only taxis painted in yellow and white, because they are official. Typically they charge a little more for each suitcase carried by night service (22.00-07.00), being Sunday, holiday and travel to the outskirts of the city (eg. Airport).
Although you can order a taxi by telephone, it is not recommended because the counter starts counting from the time of the call. If you leave a tip of 5% -10% is welcome, but the Romans did not bother to leave a tip.
Among the taxi companies we can name: Radio Taxi (tel: (06) 3570; http://www.3570.it/ ), Samarkand Radio Taxi (tel: (06) 5551; http://www.samarcanda.it / ), Pronto Taxi (tel: (06) 6645) and Radio Taxi Tevere (tel: (06) 41571).
By car :
It is not recommended to drive around town, by the number of mopeds, pedestrians, trams, reckless drivers and frequent jams that can sour the day. With the intention of avoiding traffic jams and reduce pollution in the city, the authorities have limited traffic in many areas of the city center only residents during the day and less at night. Normally exceptions for clients of hotels in these areas are made.
Parking in the city is just as problematic to drive through it. There are several underground car parks in the city- the Villa Borghese is open 24 hours a day. If you park in areas designated as Sosta Vietata (no parking), you risk that the municipal police fined him or remove the crane car. The telephone number of the municipal police is (06) 67691.
Rent a car :
To rent a car in Rome, the drivers must be over 21 years. They must also submit a valid passport and driving. You also need to have a valid international insurance policy. Normalmene money is left as the deposit or credit card number.
The car rental companies are Avis (tel: 06 481 4373; www.avisautonoleggio.it ), Europcar (tel: 06 4521 2043; www.europcar.it ), Hertz (tel: 02 6943 0019; www.hertz. it ) and Maggiore (tel: 199 151 120; www.maggiore.it ).
