Piazza del Campidoglio

Piazza del Campidoglio or Capitol Square is located at the top of the Capitoline Hill and is the first place that was designed in modern Rome. It was after the visit to Rome of Emperor Charles I in 1536 when Pope Paul III Farnese was embarrassed by the appearance of the hill and commissioned Michelangelo designing the new square.

Michelangelo designed the square so that was facing the Basilica of San Pedro , which was the political center of the city at that time. He also raised the construction of another palace (New Palace) and redesigned the Palace of the Conservatives, endowing them with great harmony with the Palazzo Senatorio.
In the center of the square an imposing equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius in bronze, which today is kept in the Palace of the Conservatives was installed. Which is located in the square today is a faithful reproduction.
Because the works were too slow, Michelangelo did not live to see his finished work but, despite this, construction was carried out by faithfully following his plans. araku places to visit

Piazza del Campidoglio is one of the main tourist centers of the city, not only because of its central location and because it are located in the Capitoline Museums , but because in the corner between the Palazzo Senatorio and the Palazzo Nuovo is located sculpture Loba Capitolina of the mythical part of the legend of Romulus and Remus .
