Just a decade after Latvia
gained independence from the Soviet Union, its capital, Riga, is a city
on the rise after joining NATO and the European Union in 2004. These
events took place three years after the city held its 800 years of
existence and the future has never been brighter for which once was
regarded throughout Europe as the "Paris of the North".
Riga has been placed firmly on the tourist map due to the increased
number of budget airline flights and standard companies that connect the
Latvian capital with other European cities. The city is indeed the business capital of the Baltic, leaving behind other capitals like Tallinn and Vilnius.
Also it is increasingly becoming the most interesting for tourists from
the three city due to its cared attractions and the proliferation of
hotels in different categories. Older than Stockholm and St. Petersburg, Riga is the only Baltic capital has an activity of a real big city.
Unfortunately, it is also suffering the typical problems of a big
metropolis and crime rates are on the rise (including the theft to
tourists).
Any memory of the hardships of Soviet times disappears quickly to
wander the streets of the city, full of gleaming restored buildings,
mobile and young people with new bars and cafes that seem to sprout
around every corner.
On a sunny day, when the smart office workers mingle with students
dressed in the latest in the streets of the city, one can imagine that
is in any European city.
